Shri Girish Desai, lovingly known as bhausaheb was a renowned thespian of the Gujarati Theatre. But he was active not only on the Gujarati Stage but also on the English, Urdu, Marathi and Hindi Stage.

He had more than 50 plays to his credit as an Actor, Director and Producer and was considered as one of the finest teachers of drama. He was highly respected as he had a great rapport not only with artistes from his generation but also with younger people and new comers. In fact his colleagues saluted him for his contribution to youth theatre.

With painstaking effort he re-started the famous Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan – Kala Kendra’s Inter-Collegiate Drama Competition in 1986 in five major languages such as Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, Urdu and English; in which more than 40 colleges with 80-90 plays participate every year from all over Mumbai.

The event commemorates bhausaheb’s birth anniversary, which falls on April 1st. It was and is a platform for all aspiring young theatre artistes to showcase their talent.xwkfslz

This is an excellent effort towards re-uniting the Bhartiya Natya Shikshapith students & will also go a long way towards bringing alive Bhausahab's dreams.

I sincerely hope & wish & pray to all ex BNS-ites to come forward & contribute towards the memories of Bhartiya Vidya Bhavans "Kala Kendra"

My relationship with Bhausaheb was very free and frank.i never hesitate to talk to him on anything.he always used to tell me to come in afternoon when he was free and we would discuss acting.he never said no to anything he was always encouraging for people who love art & theatre.Basement,Stage or geeta mandir was always there for our rehearsal. He always use to tell me to try direction.which till now i haven't tried.but inshallah now it will happen soon.
i wish all the best to all my bns frds and congrats and thanks humayun for openning this bolg and giving every one a platform to come together and share our experiences and dreams with everyone.

Sir mere liye kya the ye shabdo main likhna ya bayaan karna bahut mushkil hai ... phir bhi there are certain things which i would like to write here in this blog ... I first met Sir on a shooting for a ad film called Asian Paints where I was the model. There was Raveena Tandon as well ... if i m not mistaken that was her 2nd or 3rd ad film.
The agency was O&M and the director of the ad film was Mr. Govind Nihalani.
When I entered the make room of Rajkamal Studio ... i was introduced to a very gentle and a very smiling person by the name Mr. Giresh Desai.
In the ad film .. Mr. Giresh Desai was to play my Father and after the completion and being with him for the next 3 days of our shoot .. the relation of on screen went on to become the same in real life as well.
During the shoot he gave me lots of tips on acting .. told me about the launching of a acting school which he was starting called BNS at Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan.
He told me to join the school which I did.
Though he is no more but till date for me Sir is alive and always in my mind and heart.
He was a father figure, my friend philosopher and guide.
Even in his anger and scoldings there used be lot of love and encouragement.
As a human too .. i feel and think every citizen of this country should aspire to be like him.
He loved and respected all religion.
It's these qualities that has been taught and inculcated in all the students who had the opportunity to learn from him.
For me and for many ... Bhau Sahab cannot die .. he could only live and he is still living in all our hearts and minds.
To end this on a note I will just say this that I wish there could be more Giresh Desai's in this world who had so much love to spread.

I was student of BNS 1996 batch... i enjoyed the process of learning i met so many friends... v all r yet in touch, its almost 12 years now....

I asked to Bhau direct a play in 1997, he use to come in my rehearsals.. from 1998 he started believing in me and then never came in my rehearsals.

When Bhau was ill, he called me and said you conduct the annual gathering of 2001. and in 2002 he passed away... from that year i became the teacher of Natya shikshapeeth...

For me he has not gone... he is still alive...

Love you Bhau.

I was student of Parag Vijay Dutt Drama Academy and have got the chance to learn theatre under Bhau Saheb's guidance. We used to be in BNS during rehearsals and Munshi Trophy Competition and other Competitions. Very fortunate to be his student. I still remember what he taught. PVD Batch 1999-2000.
